November 22, 2022

We have all hunkered down for another year of strict lock-down since our last anniversary. Join us this year on November 22nd 2022, at Level 4, Pavilion Hall, Rosewood Hotel Hong Kong, to celebrate with us for our 2nd anniversary of Family Office Association Hong Kong (FOAHK)!
This year, we’re not having you sit for the whole afternoon to listen to a bunch of speeches and panels. But we have invited some friends to share with you a journey of inspiration, about their passion for sports, the nature, and how they combine their passions with serving others in the society!

ABOUT OUR SPECIAL GUESTS:

Edie Hu

Meet Edie Hu, a Hong Kong-based open water swimmer who circumnavigated Hong Kong Island in 2018 raising U$80,000 for the Splash Foundation, a local charity that teaches swimming to domestic workers and underprivileged kids in Hong Kong. But that was just a teaser. Since then, she has swum from Sri Lanka to India, the length of Lake Tahoe, and this summer, she did the English Channel on a whim. Ten days later, Edie swam around Manhattan.

Yet Edie doesn’t even consider herself an elite athlete, and her approach to training isn’t nearly as grueling as you might expect. It’s mostly an abiding love for the water, amazing buoyancy, and of course, clocking more kilometers that she can count that have enabled her to conquer these challenges.

But that’s just the point. Edie doesn’t even think of most of her swims as training, rather each one as a mini adventure. A lover of marine life, she always swims with a camera. Some of her most memorable footage is of swims with “Dave the Dolphin” off Deep Water Bay.

And she is no stranger to the ultra-wealth. After 13 years in the Sotheby’s ceramics department, she worked at Citi Private Bank advising clients on art purchases. In 2020, Edie started her own art consultancy.

Edie will sit down with her swimming mate, fellow SPLASH fundraising companion, Frederik Balfour, to talk about how she managed to keep swimming throughout the pandemic. Unlike the pool workouts, each open water swim is a unique combination of weather, waves and temperature, none of which one can control or predict. Edie accredits her sustainability to being flexible and far sighted, and accepting things beyond her control, lessons that could equally apply to managing family offices.

Frederik Balfour

Frederik Balfour is a Hong Kong-based writer who has reported from more than 25 countries in his 30- year career. He was embedded with the U.S. army in Iraq in 2003 and spent three months in Pakistan after 9-11 covering the war on terror for BusinessWeek magazine. During his 19 year- stint at BusinessWeek and later Bloomberg he wrote on everything from wafer fabs to wine, from an award-winning cover story about Foxconn founder Terry Guo, to Millennials in hoodies paying millions for contemporary art at auction. His most recent articles include a story on investing in rare Japanese single malt whisky and the perils of buying NFTs.

Balfour ran competitively in graduate school, picking up a Masters of Economics at the London School of Economics and a second Masters in Journalism and Ph.D. in Economics at UC Berkeley. Like Edie, he is an avid open water swimmer and coaches at the Splash Foundation. At the height of the pandemic, he turned his three-week quarantine into an opportunity to raise money for Splash by walking the length of his hotel room, nine paces long, to clock more than 210 kilometers.

Thank you for the support to FOAHK and we’re looking forward to welcoming you in person on
